Khosrow Prays by the Spring at Night
From C4.62, Kay Khosrow Vanishes in the Snow. It illustrates C4.62.38–49:
- C4.62.38At last a spring appeared beside the way;Toward it advanced the Shah without delay.
- C4.62.39They all dismounted by that water clear,Ate food, and rested from their march and fear.
- C4.62.40The Shah addressed the lords who marched with him:“Here let us stay until the stars grow dim.
- C4.62.41Let us recall the past throughout the night;Hereafter I shall vanish from your sight.
- C4.62.42When radiant sun uplifts its flag of gold,And dark earth brightens under morning’s hold,
- C4.62.43Then comes the hour in which I pass away,With blessed Soroush guiding me that day.
- C4.62.44If my heart darkens and rejects this road,I will tear it out beneath its mortal load.”
- C4.62.45As night advanced, the famed Kayanian kingPrayed to his God beside the flowing spring.
- C4.62.46He bathed his head and body in the flow,And read the Zand-Avesta, soft and low.
- C4.62.47He told the wise companions gathered near,“Farewell forever, friends whom I hold dear.
- C4.62.48When sunlight lifts its spear and morning gleams,You shall behold me only in your dreams.
- C4.62.49Tomorrow leave these sands and go your way;Though clouds rain musk, you must no longer stay.
