Hishvi and Murin Behold the Slain Wolf
From C5.10, Goshtasb Slays the Wolf. It illustrates C5.10.36–47 (to C5.10.48):
- C5.10.36Then came Goshtasb on foot, all stained with blood,His face like fenugreek flowers in bud.
- C5.10.37They saw him, then rose, and wept as they wept;Their lamentations surged again and swept.
- C5.10.38They clasped him mournfully, their faces pale;Like springtime clouds, their tears fell without fail.
- C5.10.39“How went your battle with the wolf?” they cried.“Our hearts have bled for you here by the tide.”
- C5.10.40Goshtasb replied, “Good friends, is there no fearOf God in Rum, that such a beast lives here?
- C5.10.41Year after year, how could this dragon treadYour land at will, and fill your hearts with dread?
- C5.10.42It kills a world of people in its path;Your Caesar counts as dust before its wrath.
- C5.10.43But I have cleft it with the sword of Salm; Its death has brought the roads enduring calm.
- C5.10.44Go see that wonder now, its mighty hide;No man has seen a beast so broad and wide.
- C5.10.45An aged elephant within its skin,It spans the very wood it settled in.”
- C5.10.46Then both ran there, their hearts released from grief,And saw the monster dead beyond belief.
- C5.10.47The wolf loomed like an elephant in view; Its claws were lions’, and its hide dark blue.
