Daqiqi Appears in Ferdowsi's Dream
From C6.1, Ferdowsi’s Dream of Daqiqi. It illustrates C6.1.1–12:
- C6.1.1Thus was it that one night the poet dreamed:Within his cup, wine like rosewater gleamed.
- C6.1.2Daqiqi then appeared and, drawing near,Told tales about the wine-cup, loud and clear.
- C6.1.3He called, “Ferdowsi, when you drink, be trueTo Kay Kavus’s custom in all you do.
- C6.1.4You chose a king in whom his throne takes pride,With crown and Fortune standing at his side.
- C6.1.5Mahmud, the conquering king whom realms acclaim,Brings joy to mighty and to poor the same.
- C6.1.6For eighty-five years, sorrow shall not grow,Nor shall his treasure dwindle, sinking low.
- C6.1.7Hereafter he will march on Chin in force,And every chief will clear his army’s course.
- C6.1.8No harsh word need he speak throughout the land; All royal crowns shall come into his hand.
- C6.1.9If over this great tale you long have striven,All that your heart desired is now given.
- C6.1.10I sang of this before; if you should seeMy verses, keep them in your book for me.
- C6.1.11A thousand couplets told, before I passed,Of Goshtasb and Arjasp; they were my last.
- C6.1.12Should these words reach the king, my soul will soonRise from the dust and soar up to the moon.”
