Goshtasb Raises Zarir from the Field
From C6.19, The Turks Ask Mercy of Esfandiyar. It illustrates C6.19.21–27:
- C6.19.21But when he saw his brother on the ground,Flung vilely down amid the heaps around,
- C6.19.22He tore apart the royal robe he wore,Dismounted from Shulak and grieved still more.
- C6.19.23He clutched his beard in both his hands and cried:“O Prince of Balkh, with you all joy has died.
- C6.19.24O gallant horseman, chief of royal name,O chosen hero, crowned in warlike fame,
- C6.19.25My pillar, guardian of our country’s might,Crown of the army, all the world’s bright light!”
- C6.19.26He then drew close and raised him from the plain,And cleansed his face himself of blood and stain.
- C6.19.27He laid him in a golden coffin, tornWith grief, as though Zarir had not been born.
