Goshtasb Pledges the Crown Again
From C6.33, Esfandiyar Is Sent Again to Fight Arjasp. It illustrates C6.33.4–15 (to C6.33.19):
- C6.33.4Goshtasb said, “Valiant son, hear what I say:You smile; your sisters lie in chains today.
- C6.33.5How blessed those who died upon the field,Not shamed by Turkish hands or forced to yield.
- C6.33.6When subjects see me seated on the throne,What will they say of this disgrace well known?
- C6.33.7As long as life remains within my frame,I shall weep blood and burn with this cruel shame.
- C6.33.8By God Most High, Yazdan of depth and height,I pledge this crown to you before His sight:
- C6.33.9If you go safely into Turan’s land,And brave the dragon’s breath with fearless hand,
- C6.33.10If you release your sisters from the foe,The crown and empire to your rule shall go.
- C6.33.11I shall yield throne and treasure, realm and store,And crown you king the day you reach my door.”
- C6.33.12Esfandiyar replied, “May no one seeThe day when you, my king, are lost to me.
- C6.33.13I am your slave, my father and my king;I seek no crown, nor any royal thing.
- C6.33.14My soul and body stand as ransom still;I ask no throne to rule by my own will.
- C6.33.15I shall avenge our dead upon the foe,And bring Arjasp and all his kingdom low.
