Gorgsar Questioned at the Fork
From C7.2, The Wolves of the First Stage. It illustrates C7.2.6–17 (to C7.2.22):
- C7.2.6He marched until the road before him split,And camped where both dividing pathways knit.
- C7.2.7He bade them spread the board and furnish wine,With harp and song to make the gathering shine.
- C7.2.8All the chiefs of the line sat down to eatBeside the king, each in his proper seat.
- C7.2.9They brought Gorgsar, as ordered, bound and sore,Still worn by all the misery he bore.
- C7.2.10By royal order, four full cups were poured;Gorgsar received them there before the lord.
- C7.2.11Then spoke Esfandiyar: “Unlucky one,I shall enthrone you high beneath the sun.
- C7.2.12I grant you Turan’s kingdom and its throne,And lift you high where royal powers are known,
- C7.2.13When I return with victory complete,If all your words are free from all deceit.
- C7.2.14Your kin and all your children’s kin shall beUnharmed, if you speak truthfully to me.
- C7.2.15But if you turn aside and utter lies,No falsehood will find passage through my eyes.
- C7.2.16My knife shall halve you at the waist and makeThe hearts of all who see your body quake.”
- C7.2.17Gorgsar replied, “O prince of glorious name,No lie from me shall stain your royal fame.
