The Witch Comes as a Maiden
From C7.5, The Witch of the Fourth Stage. It illustrates C7.5.32–41:
- C7.5.32The witch heard bold Esfandiyar and grewLike spring’s red rose when freshened by the dew.
- C7.5.33She said, “A lion comes with robe and wineAnd music, caught within this snare of mine.”
- C7.5.34Foul, wrinkled, and malicious in the gloom,She worked her spells and changed her shape and bloom.
- C7.5.35She took the beauty of a Turkish maid,With musk-black hair and cheeks like Chin brocade.
- C7.5.36Her cheeks like gardens, flowers at her breast,She came to where the prince had stopped to rest.
- C7.5.37The prince, when he beheld her shining face,Sang, drank, and played with yet a greater grace.
- C7.5.38He said, “O just and sovereign God, you guideOur feet through wilds and up the mountainside.
- C7.5.39I wished for such a moon-faced, radiant maid,To share my joy within this woodland shade.
- C7.5.40The just Creator gave what I desired;May heart and soul be pure, with worship fired.”
- C7.5.41One cup of musk-sweet wine he offered up,To make her face glow ruby from the cup.
