The Simorgh Strikes the Blades
From C7.6, The Simorgh of the Fifth Stage. It illustrates C7.6.29–36:
- C7.6.29From mountain heights, the Simorgh saw the trainBehind the box, and heard the karnays’ strain.
- C7.6.30It swooped like some dark cloud from mountain height,And hid from all the sun and moon’s clear light.
- C7.6.31It sought to snatch the carriage as its prey,As leopards seize the game they bear away.
- C7.6.32Its wings and feathers struck the blades and tore; Its strength and splendor were its own no more.
- C7.6.33It beat with beak and talons, torn and stung,Then sank, exhausted, where the sword-blades clung.
- C7.6.34Its young flew screaming from the rocky nest,With tears of blood and terror in each breast.
- C7.6.35Their shadows blurred the eyes of all below,As grief and shrieking crossed the plain of woe.
- C7.6.36Blood washed the horses, box, and carriage red;The wounded bird lay weak, its vigor fled.
