The Chiefs Beg Esfandiyar to Turn Back
From C7.7, The Snow of the Sixth Stage. It illustrates C7.7.28–39 (to C7.7.51):
- C7.7.28The Iranians heard Gorgsar and felt pain,And said, “Noble prince, from ruin refrain.
- C7.7.29Do not, with all your might, pursue your fall;If this is true, death waits for one and all.
- C7.7.30We came to die in battle, not wear outOur helms; if he speaks truth, there is no doubt.
- C7.7.31You have passed through rough roads and beasts of prey,And walked through wonders none can count today.
- C7.7.32No warrior, no heroic Shah of old,Could number such a tale of trials told.
- C7.7.33So, thank the Maker for all victories won,And turn back now beneath the living sun.
- C7.7.34You may return triumphant, and your nameBefore Goshtasb shall shine with lasting fame.
- C7.7.35If you should march elsewhere, Turan’s whole stateWill serve your fame and magnify your fate.
- C7.7.36As Gorgsar said, do not hold life so cheap,Nor cast this army where the slaughtered sleep.
- C7.7.37Now victory has brought us such renown;Do not cast life away with head and crown.”
- C7.7.38The Pahlevan’s young face grew worn and oldTo hear the counsel that his warriors told.
- C7.7.39“You came from Iran for advice alone,Not for a lofty name to call your own.
