Rostam Refuses the Chains
From C8.11, Rostam and Esfandiyar Meet. It illustrates C8.11.53–63:
- C8.11.53Your words bring joy; I yield to your command,Except these bonds upon my foot and hand.
- C8.11.54Bonds bring defeat and shame; none shall see meAlive in chains. That is my firm decree.”
- C8.11.55Esfandiyar replied, “O heroes’ pride,Your words are truth; let falsehood stand aside.
- C8.11.56No man gains light through lies; Bishutan knowsThe Shah’s commands that sent me where he chose.
- C8.11.57If I should come as guest within your hall,While you refuse the Shah’s command and call,
- C8.11.58My day would darken; should we come to fight,I would assume the leopard’s wrath and might.
- C8.11.59For should I fight with you, our bond would break,The right of bread and salt I would forsake.
- C8.11.60My claim to noble birth would be in doubt,If I should cast that binding duty out.
- C8.11.61But if I disobey the Shah’s desire,My dwelling in the next world will be fire.
- C8.11.62Yet since you wish it, let one day be spentWith wine in hand, and hearts on peace intent.
- C8.11.63Who knows what fate tomorrow will allot? We need not weave a tale of what is not.”
