Esfandiyar Vaults Onto the Black Steed
From C8.21, Rostam Battles Esfandiyar. It illustrates C8.21.24–31:
- C8.21.24He bade them saddle up his charger black,And bring it to him, harness on its back.
- C8.21.25He saw the sable horse; his strength and prideOf manhood stirred him at the horse’s side.
- C8.21.26He set his spear’s butt firmly on the ground,Then vaulted to the saddle with a bound.
- C8.21.27As when a leopard lands upon the backOf some wild ass that cries at the attack.
- C8.21.28The soldiers watched him, marveling at the sight,And blessed their famous champion’s strength and might.
- C8.21.29He rode, and saw upon his steed aloneGreat Rostam, with no comrade of his own.
- C8.21.30He called to Bishutan upon his steed,“To fight this man, no friend or mate I need.
- C8.21.31Since he stands there alone, I too shall go,And mount that lofty height before the foe.”
