Rostam Addresses His War-Gear
From C8.20, Zal Advises Rostam. It illustrates C8.20.3–12:
- C8.20.3“Bring me my Indian sword and battle gear,My jowshan and my helmet; bring them here.
- C8.20.4Bring bow, bargostvan, tiger-skin to wear,My kamand, heavy gorz, jowshan to bear.”
- C8.20.5Zavareh bade the treasurer obey,And bring the arms that lay concealed away.
- C8.20.6When Rostam saw his gear, he shook his head,And drew a deep sigh from his breast, and said:
- C8.20.7“O zereh, you have rested for a whileFrom battle’s noise and danger’s bitter trial.
- C8.20.8Now stand firm in the task that waits for you;Be fortune’s shirt in all that we must do.
- C8.20.9What field is this, where two bold lions fight,Both roaring as they meet in all their might?
- C8.20.10Now what will Esfandiyar bring to bear? What move will he attempt? What will he dare?”
- C8.20.11When Zal had heard these words, his heart grew sore; The ancient man grew troubled more and more.
- C8.20.12He said, “Famed Pahlevan, what words are theseThat strip my troubled spirit of its ease?
