Rostam Leaps From Wounded Rakhsh
From C8.23, Rostam Flees to the Heights. It illustrates C8.23.7–14:
- C8.23.7When shafts flew from Esfandiyar’s strong bow,Both Rostam and great Rakhsh received the blow.
- C8.23.8The prince rode round him; Rostam’s arrows flew,But none could pierce that body through and through.
- C8.23.9Each shaft the prince released left Rostam sore; His own shafts failed; he could withstand no more.
- C8.23.10Bewildered at such fighting, Rostam cried,“Esfandiyar has brass for flesh and hide!”
- C8.23.11When Rakhsh grew weak, the arrows lodged in him,And horse and rider bled from every limb,
- C8.23.12The rider, swift as wind, sprang from his steed,And turned toward the heights in bitter need.
- C8.23.13Then wounded Rakhsh went homeward on his own,And left his master on the height alone.
- C8.23.14Blood poured from Rostam’s body like a tide;As if Mount Bistoon shook, its strength denied.
