Rostam Wades the Hirmund at Dusk
From C8.23, Rostam Flees to the Heights. It illustrates C8.23.50–58:
- C8.23.50Then Rostam turned away; the prince’s eyeWatched how the wounded hero would pass by.
- C8.23.51Like some great ship, he crossed the river’s tide,And prayed that God would heal his wounded side.
- C8.23.52He said, “O just and holy Judge on high,If from these wounds I fall beneath the sky,
- C8.23.53Who of the mighty will avenge me, whoWill take my heart, my judgment, customs too?”
- C8.23.54Esfandiyar kept watching as he went,And saw him reach the farther bank, near spent.
- C8.23.55He cried, “This is no man! Before my eyes,A mighty elephant of power and size!”
- C8.23.56He crossed the water, though his wounds were sore,In anguish from the shafts his body bore.
- C8.23.57In wonder stood the prince; his voice was raisedTo God, the mighty Judge, whom thus he praised:
- C8.23.58“You shaped him as You wished, by Your command,And graced both earth and time with one so grand.”
