The Simorgh Heals Rostam and Rakhsh
From C8.25, The Simorgh Comes to Rostam’s Aid. It illustrates C8.25.28–35:
- C8.25.28The bird surveyed his wounds with knowing eye,And saw where all the means to heal might lie.
- C8.25.29Four arrowheads she drew; her beak appliedTo wounded flesh drew out the blood inside.
- C8.25.30She rubbed her feather on each wound he bore;Great Rostam’s strength and farr she did restore.
- C8.25.31She said, “Bind up your wounds and rest one week;Avoid all danger; safety you must seek.
- C8.25.32With milk, wet one of my own feathers through; Then stroke the wounds the arrows dealt to you.”
- C8.25.33She called for Rakhsh, then pressed her beak to aidHis right foreleg, where arrow-wounds were made.
- C8.25.34Six arrowheads she drew; his neck was freed,And no wound marred the body of the steed.
- C8.25.35Then Rakhsh neighed out, and Rostam laughed for joy;No grief remained their gladness to destroy.
