Esfandiyar Entrusts Bahman to Rostam
From C8.28, Esfandiyar’s Last Wishes. It illustrates C8.28.19–28:
- C8.28.19Now Bahman, this renowned young son of mine,My watchful counselor of wise design,
- C8.28.20Receive from me as though you were his sire;Remember all the things that I require.
- C8.28.21Keep him in Zabul, glad in heart and mind;Recall the deeds of men of evil kind.
- C8.28.22Teach him the ordering of war’s array,The feast’s due seating, and the hunter’s way.
- C8.28.23Teach wine and music, polo, work, and mirth,And greatness, and enjoyment of this earth.
- C8.28.24Jamasp—may all his name be lost to view,And may his wishes never once come true;
- C8.28.25Foretold that Bahman would preserve my name,A king more high and glorious in his fame.”
- C8.28.26When matchless Rostam heard, he stood upright,His right hand on his breast, his pledge forthright.
- C8.28.27He said, “Though you depart, my word shall stand;I shall fulfill each part of your command.
- C8.28.28Upon the ivory throne he shall be crowned,A lovely circlet on his forehead bound.”
