Bishutan and Bahman Reach the Prince
From C8.27, Rostam Shoots Esfandiyar in the Eyes. It illustrates C8.27.27–37:
- C8.27.27On foot they hurried from the troops in grief,And ran together to the wounded chief.
- C8.27.28They saw the warrior’s chest all stained with gore; His hand the bloodied shaft that struck him bore.
- C8.27.29Then Bishutan cast dust upon his head,And tore his robe, with cries for one near dead.
- C8.27.30Bahman rolled in the dust; his face he laidIn warm blood, weeping as the farr would fade.
- C8.27.31Then Bishutan said, “What great man can findThe world’s deep secret, what religious mind?
- C8.27.32For Faith he drew the scimitar of wrath,With valor as he trod the vengeful path.
- C8.27.33He swept idolatry from every land,And never raised a tyrant’s heavy hand.
- C8.27.34Yet in his youth destruction struck him down;Dust took the head that used to wear the crown.
- C8.27.35The wicked man who makes the whole world ache,And causes noble souls to grieve and break,
- C8.27.36Lives long, while year on year he passes through,And never knows the harm that battles do.”
- C8.27.37The two youths cradled him with grieving care,And wiped the blood that stained his face and hair.
