Rostam Feasts Bahman on Wild Ass
From C8.8, Bahman Delivers Esfandiyar’s Message. It illustrates C8.8.37–45:
- C8.8.37He spread soft bread and brought the roasted meat,A wild ass, hot and ready there to eat.
- C8.8.38He laid the tablecloth before his guest,And spoke of former days as they took rest.
- C8.8.39He seated his own brother at the spread,But called no other nobles to be fed.
- C8.8.40Before himself he placed another beast,His customary portion at a feast.
- C8.8.41He salted it, then cut and ate his share;Bahman looked on, astonished by the fare.
- C8.8.42Young Bahman ate so little, scarce a bite;A hundredfold was Rostam’s appetite.
- C8.8.43Then Rostam smiled: “The splendor borne by kingsIs meant to let them taste life’s pleasant things.
- C8.8.44If this is all the food that you can stand,How did you cross the Stages of that land?
- C8.8.45How do you wield the spear in battle’s heat,O prince, with such a small desire to eat?”
