The Featherless Shaft Through the Lioness
From D10.14, Bahram Slays Lions and Weds Arezu. It illustrates D10.14.1–8:
- D10.14.1The Shah urged Shabdiz onward through the plain,And came upon a forest’s green domain.
- D10.14.2Before the wood two savage lions stood; He strung his bow and faced them where he could.
- D10.14.3His arrow tore the lion’s breast and foundIts way, both point and feathers, to the ground.
- D10.14.4Then Bahram turned his bow, devoid of fear,And shot the lioness, his skill made clear.
- D10.14.5He pinned her breast and loins with one clean blow,Then laughed and spoke in scorn above the foe:
- D10.14.6“That shaft lacked feathers, and its point was worn;Yet through the lioness its path was borne.”
- D10.14.7His escort praised him: “Famous king of earth,No throne has seen a Shah of equal worth.
- D10.14.8With featherless shafts you lions overthrow; The roots of flinty mountains too would go.”
