The Hunters' Market on the Plain
From D10.15, Bahram’s Hunt and Night with Farshidvard. It illustrates D10.15.3–10:
- D10.15.3For one full month they camped upon the plain,With tents and royal pavilions in their train.
- D10.15.4They swept the field for game on every side;At night, no man from wine or music shied.
- D10.15.5There all was game and flesh, with harp and lyre,And round the plain they kindled many a fire.
- D10.15.6They burned both green and dry wood in the blaze,While dealers came from town through dusty ways.
- D10.15.7They tarried there to trade with Bahram’s men;The plain grew bright with buyers once again.
- D10.15.8A quarter dinar bought the hunters’ gain:Ten gazelles and one Gur-e-Khar from the plain.
- D10.15.9Whoever needed meat for child or guestTook home both game and waterfowl, the best.
- D10.15.10On loaded asses game was borne away; When one month passed, the Shah could brook no stay.
