The Chieftains Rebuke the Pleasure-Loving Shah
From D10.19, The Khan of Chin Invades Iran. It illustrates D10.19.9–17:
- D10.19.9Then all the chieftains, gathered from the land,Came full of wrath before Bahram’s command.
- D10.19.10With rage and bitterness they bluntly cried,“Your glorious Fortune turns its face aside.
- D10.19.11The heads of kings should be intent on war;Your heart seeks feast and chase forevermore.
- D10.19.12The crown and throne are worthless in your eyes;Iran, the troops, and treasure you despise.”
- D10.19.13The ruler answered those who showed the way,The Mobadan gathered round in dismay:
- D10.19.14“My helper is Yazdan whose hand has wroughtThe world, more wise than all the sages taught.
- D10.19.15By that great Sovereign’s power, I shall holdIran secure against the wolves grown bold.
- D10.19.16With Fortune, troops, the sword, and wealth to spend,I will bring this land’s suffering to an end.”
- D10.19.17He went on with his sport; the nobles wept,Their eyes ran blood while he his pleasures kept.
