Gold Rings in the Onagers' Ears

Gold Rings in the Onagers' Ears

From D10.18, Bahram’s Gur-e-Khar Hunt before the Princes. It illustrates D10.18.26–31:

  • D10.18.26
The troops behind him cleared the plain of game; Then Bahram gave command to mark his name.
  • D10.18.27
He bade them fashion rings of shining gold,And grave his royal name for all to hold.
  • D10.18.28
He ringed the creatures’ ears and let them go,That all the world his royal name might know.
  • D10.18.29
Three hundred beasts he loosed to range the waste,Each ringed, as royal quarry to be chased.
  • D10.18.30
A herald rode among the troops to say:“Give all these Gur-e-Khars as gifts away.
  • D10.18.31
Let merchants take them freely from the plain;Let no man sell his quarry here for gain.”
