Shangul Lays His Turban By
From D10.35, Shangul Learns Bahram’s Identity. It illustrates D10.35.24–31:
- D10.35.24Bahram replied, “You know me; why, then, blameMy heart as false, and brand me with that name?
- D10.35.25No blame can follow from the path I chose; No stain of treachery from my conduct grows.
- D10.35.26I rule Iran and Turan far and wide;I am the brave men’s pillar and their guide.
- D10.35.27I will repay you, strike your foemen down,And seat you as a father near my crown.
- D10.35.28I will not vex your realm with tribute’s claim;Your child shall rise to queenly rank and fame.
- D10.35.29She shall be luster of the western land,And crown of women, honored by my hand.”
- D10.35.30Astonished, King Shangul laid his turban by,And spurred toward the Shah with lowered eye.
- D10.35.31He reached the Shah and begged him to forgive,Then clasped him, overjoyed to see him live.
