The Drunken Shoemaker Rides the Lion
From D10.7, Bahram Allows Wine Again. It illustrates D10.7.9–16:
- D10.7.9A royal lion had escaped its chain,And roamed in majesty along the lane.
- D10.7.10The shoemaker was still so full of wine,He could not count his fingers in a line.
- D10.7.11He ran and mounted on the roaring beast,And clutched its ears, not frightened in the least.
- D10.7.12The lion had been fed and did not spring; The youth sat firm as on some harmless thing.
- D10.7.13The keeper hurried after them in fear,With chain in hand and kamand gathered near.
- D10.7.14He saw the youth astride the lion, sureAs on a donkey, careless and secure.
- D10.7.15He ran at once before the palace gate,And told the Shah this marvel, strange and great.
- D10.7.16He swore he saw the sight with his own eyes:A prodigy beneath the turning skies!
