The Silent Villagers Anger the Shah
From D10.8, Rozbeh Ruins and Restores a Village. It illustrates D10.8.8–13:
- D10.8.8He reached a settled, green, and fertile spot,With homes and cattle; want and care forgot.
- D10.8.9The monarch, vexed and overcome by heat,Had chosen that same village for his seat.
- D10.8.10The people came to gaze upon the king,But none pronounced the blessings they should bring.
- D10.8.11One would have thought each villager a beast,A tethered ass that stirred not in the least.
- D10.8.12Its folk disgusted him; he turned his face,And spoke in anger of that ill-starred place:
- D10.8.13“Let this green village be the wild beasts’ den;Let pitch-black water turn its fields to fen.”
