The Pupil Who Claims the Dream
From D13.20.1, Bozorgmehr Interprets the Dream. It illustrates D13.20.1.23–34 (to D13.20.1.35):
- D13.20.1.23One chief among them, Azad Sarv by name,Came into Marv to seek a sage of fame.
- D13.20.1.24He passed the town and saw a learned mage,Who taught the sacred book from page to page.
- D13.20.1.25With anger, harshness, and a lifted voice,He drilled the boys and gave them little choice.
- D13.20.1.26One pupil, well advanced in sacred lore,Was Bozorgmehr, intent to learn still more.
- D13.20.1.27He studied lovingly the sacred roll,With open mind and clear aspiring soul.
- D13.20.1.28Then Azad Sarv drew near and checked his rein,And asked who might the royal dream explain.
- D13.20.1.29The teacher said, “This task is not for me;The Zand-Avesta guides what I can see.
- D13.20.1.30I teach these children, but I do not dareTo speak of matters past my proper care.”
- D13.20.1.31But Bozorgmehr, who heard the envoy ask,Spoke blushing: “Mine to answer is this task.
- D13.20.1.32Its hidden meaning I can make quite plain; Before the Shah, the truth I will explain.”
- D13.20.1.33His teacher cried, “Have you your roll by heart? What pride has made you claim so high a part?
- D13.20.1.34How dare you claim interpreter’s commandBefore you hold the sacred text in hand?”
