The Serpent at the Sleeper's Head
From D13.20.1, Bozorgmehr Interprets the Dream. It illustrates D13.20.1.43–51:
- D13.20.1.43When food and rest were due, they reached a placeWith water, trees, and shadow’s calm embrace.
- D13.20.1.44Beneath broad boughs, they left their mounts to eat,Then rested quietly in that retreat.
- D13.20.1.45While Bozorgmehr slept, sheltered by the bough,His mantle drawn across his face and brow,
- D13.20.1.46His noble guide, still wakeful, saw with dreadA snake draw back the mantle from his head.
- D13.20.1.47It sniffed him closely, down from head to feet,Then climbed the tree and left the shaded seat.
- D13.20.1.48When that black serpent scaled the tree-stem high,The youth awoke and looked with troubled eye.
- D13.20.1.49The serpent saw him wake and start in fear,Then vanished through the shadowed branches near.
- D13.20.1.50The envoy, struck with wonder and with awe,Called down God’s name upon the youth he saw.
- D13.20.1.51He thought, “This wise young man will rise to fame;Great Fortune surely gathers round his name.”
