The Arrow in the Roast Lamb
From D6.14, Mehrak of Jahram Sacks the Palace of Ardeshir. It illustrates D6.14.14–20:
- D6.14.14He ordered tables spread with cups and wine;Musicians played before the royal line.
- D6.14.15They set roast lambs in plenty on the board,And all bent down to eat with one accord.
- D6.14.16But when Ardeshir first began to eat,A pointed arrow struck the roasted meat.
- D6.14.17It struck the plump roast lamb and sank from sight,Its whole length buried in the flesh outright.
- D6.14.18The wise and warlike nobles, filled with dread,Drew back their hands at once from meat and bread.
- D6.14.19Each heart bled anguish; none could bear the feast. One drew the arrow from the roasted beast.
- D6.14.20They saw the writing on the shaft; aloudA scribe among them read it to the crowd.
