Ardeshir Comes as a Merchant
From D6.15, Ardeshir Discovers the Truth about the Worm. It illustrates D6.15.72–80:
- D6.15.72Near that stronghold they halted on the crest,And caught their breath, allowing time for rest.
- D6.15.73The Worm’s own servants formed a busy crew; They numbered sixty, each with work to do.
- D6.15.74One saw the group of men and called aloud,“What wares are hidden underneath each shroud?”
- D6.15.75The Shah replied, “All sorts of wares I bring:Clothes, gold, and silver, every costly thing.
- D6.15.76Brocade, gold coins, rich silks, and jewels bright,And ornaments to please a buyer’s sight.
- D6.15.77I am a merchant from Khorasan’s land,With toil that leaves no leisure to my hand.
- D6.15.78The Worm’s good favor made my fortune rise,And now I bring these gifts before its eyes.
- D6.15.79It blessed my work; if I may serve it here,Then all my hopes will brighten and be clear.”
- D6.15.80The servants of the Worm unbarred the door,And led the laden asses to the store.
