Shapur Sets Baranush to Bridge Shushtar
From D7.12.2, Shapur Fights Rum and Caesar Makes Peace. It illustrates D7.12.2.34–41:
- D7.12.2.34He took Baranush with him on each ride,And listened to the counsel he supplied.
- D7.12.2.35At Shushtar flowed a river broad and deep,So fierce no fish could cross its foaming sweep.
- D7.12.2.36He said, “If building is your learned art,Then bridge this river; let your work now start.
- D7.12.2.37For we depart, but this work still shall stand,A lasting work of skill within the land.
- D7.12.2.38A thousand cubits long; ask what you need,Use all my treasure for this royal deed.
- D7.12.2.39Bring Roman scholars, skilled and tried and true,To help you in the work you have to do.
- D7.12.2.40When this is finished, hasten home to rest,And in your own house be your own glad guest.
- D7.12.2.41Then live in joy and safety in your land,Far from all ill and from Ahriman’s hand.”
