Bahram Slays the Lions for the Crown
From D9.13, Bahram Slays the Lions and Takes the Throne. It illustrates D9.13.16–20:
- D9.13.16Then came the wise Shah, resolute of face,With ox-head gorz in hand, and took his place.
- D9.13.17When those fierce lions saw the hero near,One snapped its chain and charged without a fear.
- D9.13.18The king struck hard upon the lion’s head,And dimmed its eyes and left the creature dead.
- D9.13.19He struck the second lion’s skull; it bled; From eyes to breast its blood ran dark and red.
- D9.13.20He sat upon the ivory seat and pressedThe heart-delighting crown upon his crest.
