Sughd Watches the Week of Battle
From E1.4, Ghatfar Defeated, Faghanish Crowned. It illustrates E1.4.48–56:
- E1.4.48The troops advanced from every side to war,Until the wind itself could pass no more.
- E1.4.49With flashing swords and gorzes in the fray,Iron on iron rang through all the day.
- E1.4.50The air itself was dense with flashing steel,As blades and axes made the tumult reel.
- E1.4.51A wind arose; the army’s dust rose higher,And sun and moon withdrew from smoke and fire.
- E1.4.52The men of Kashan and of Sughd stood near,And watched the battle, overwhelmed by fear.
- E1.4.53The eyes of men and women filled with tears,And children trembled in their mortal fears.
- E1.4.54They watched which side the circling moon and sunWould favor when the battle’s work was done.
- E1.4.55For one full week the rival armies fought,And neither side could gain the ground it sought.
- E1.4.56The slain on every side lay heaped in rows,The stones and dust grew red as redbud grows.
