The Review on the Plain
From E1.6, The Khan Writes for Peace. It illustrates E1.6.57–68 (to E1.6.73):
- E1.6.57One day he held his court upon the plain;The horsemen’s dust rose like a storm of rain.
- E1.6.58All marzbans came with golden girdles bright,And stood to serve the Shah in public sight.
- E1.6.59Baluch and Gil came bearing shields of gold,Together gathered in a body bold.
- E1.6.60A thousand steeds appeared in golden gear,Their rich caparisons shone bright and clear.
- E1.6.61Gold-scabbarded scimitars flashed in light,And iron darts and javelins shone bright.
- E1.6.62Gold seemed to grow from iron everywhere;Light married metal, dazzling all the air.
- E1.6.63Upon an elephant in silk brocade,An ivory throne of splendor was displayed;
- E1.6.64With ebony and turquoise banded round,While drums and karnays filled the air with sound.
- E1.6.65Ambassadors from Barda, Hind, and Rum,From every court on which the heavens loom,
- E1.6.66And horsemen from the plain with spear and bow,Went to the Shah in one assembled row.
- E1.6.67Thus to the men of Chin he made it known:From sun to Fish, the realm was his alone.
- E1.6.68The air churned thick with dust from every horse;The earth was armed with every warlike force.
