The Khan's Envoys Lay Their Gifts
From E1.8, The Khan Proposes Alliance by Marriage. It illustrates E1.8.39–44:
- E1.8.39The three wise men of rank approached the hall,And bowed before the Shah, observed by all.
- E1.8.40A gem-encrusted crown the envoys bore,With torques and armlets from the Khan’s own store;
- E1.8.41Full thirty thousand golden coins they laid,With silks of Chin in dazzling sheen displayed.
- E1.8.42They laid them as a gift before the king,With all the wealth that loyal envoys bring.
- E1.8.43Gold, silver, and brocades from Chin’s far homeMade earth seem brighter than the sky’s blue dome.
- E1.8.44When all the envoys had been duly seated,Their native words of blessing were repeated.
