The Raven Steals the Pearls
From E3.1, Bozorgmehr Falls from Favor. It illustrates E3.1.8–16:
- E3.1.8He set his head with trust and royal easeUpon Bozorgmehr’s lap beneath the trees.
- E3.1.9That wise king wore an armlet, rich and bright,That flashed around his arm with jeweled light.
- E3.1.10By chance, its clasp broke loose beside his bed;The armlet fell beside his resting head.
- E3.1.11A sable raven swooped down from the sky,And marked the armlet with a greedy eye;
- E3.1.12Three royal pearls the glittering band possessed;The raven snatched the jewels to its chest.
- E3.1.13It gulped the lustrous pearls into its bill,Then soared away across the wooded hill.
- E3.1.14At that strange sign, Bozorgmehr stood aghast,And read the sky’s dark motion racing fast.
- E3.1.15He knew his fall and coming days of pain;His bitter season now began its reign.
- E3.1.16The Shah awoke and saw him bite his lip,While dread held all the sage within its grip.
