Saveh Holds Back Parmudeh
From E5.10, The Second Exchange with King Saveh. It illustrates E5.10.64–71:
- E5.10.64The envoy turned, his face a pallid hue;His youthful Fortune aged as he withdrew.
- E5.10.65He told King Saveh what he had to say;The monarch’s face turned black with fresh dismay.
- E5.10.66Parmudeh said, “Why plead in such despair? Those meager troops deserve no fear or care!”
- E5.10.67He reached the entrance of the camp and criedFor bells and gongs and elephants outside.
- E5.10.68The kousts resounded, booming deep and loud,Till heaven itself seemed black beneath the cloud.
- E5.10.69While that famed youth made ready for the fight,The king feared Bahram and his martial might.
- E5.10.70He told his son, “Our chosen warrior, stay;Begin no battle till the break of day.”
- E5.10.71Both armies drew apart; the watches spread,While fires burned bright and whispered rumors sped.
