Saveh's Host Jammed in the Narrow Plain
From E5.9, Saveh and Bahram Chubin Face Each Other. It illustrates E5.9.15–22:
- E5.9.15He ranked his army in that narrow place;The air grew indigo, earth hid its face.
- E5.9.16Full forty thousand horsemen held the right,With javelins and spears prepared for fight;
- E5.9.17The left held forty thousand, row on row,With bared blades burning to confront the foe;
- E5.9.18One hundred thousand held the center line,Where Saveh’s golden throne and banners shine.
- E5.9.19Before the front, the elephants stood tall,And blocked the field, a living fortress wall;
- E5.9.20While crowded in the rear, the surplus massStood choked and useless in the narrow pass.
- E5.9.21King Saveh grieved to see his army’s plight,Confined within a field so cramped and tight.
- E5.9.22It seemed that Fortune turned against his reign,And sought to seize his throne upon that plain.
