Bahram Chubin Defies Saveh's Envoy
From E5.8, Bahram Chubin Answers King Saveh. It illustrates E5.8.34–42:
- E5.8.34That proud king’s envoy came to Bahram’s place,And gave those biting words before his face.
- E5.8.35Bahram replied, “Conceal no word I say;Take all my answer back without delay.
- E5.8.36Say: ‘I am low, you say; my humble nameAnd lowly standing bring me only shame.
- E5.8.37The king of kings was too august to rideIn royal wrath against your swelling pride.
- E5.8.38A man as mean as I now takes the field,With troops to make your royal kindred yield.
- E5.8.39I shall cut off your head and send the kingA prize too base upon a spear to bring.
- E5.8.40For one as low as I to seek your graceWould bring you shame and tarnish your high place.
- E5.8.41You shall not see me till we meet in fight,My violet dragon standard in your sight!
- E5.8.42That dragon marks your death; its stroke shall shredYour golden helm and cleanly cleave your head.’”
