The Khan Will Not Look at Bahram
From E5.18, Hormizd Seeks Alliance with the Khan. It illustrates E5.18.32–41:
- E5.18.32When Bahram heard what gifts the Shah had sent,And how the Khan returned in high content,
- E5.18.33He rode to meet him with a chosen train,His heart still troubled by remorse and pain.
- E5.18.34He stored provisions where the Khan would pass,In town and village, hill and open grass.
- E5.18.35Ashamed of all the wrong that he had done,He sought forgiveness from King Saveh’s son.
- E5.18.36He greeted him with blessings on his way;The Khan turned from him, nothing more to say.
- E5.18.37No coin, provision, slave, or gift he took;He rode as though he would not spare a look.
- E5.18.38For three full stages Bahram rode beside;The Khan ignored him with unwavering pride.
- E5.18.39Upon the fourth, Parmudeh sent to say:“Turn back; you have endured enough today.”
- E5.18.40When Bahram heard that cold, dismissing word,Chagrin and sorrow in his bosom stirred;
- E5.18.41He turned his rein toward Balkh in silent dread,While on to Tisfoon all the rumors sped.
