Bahram Spins in the Woman's Gown
From E5.20, Bahram Turns the Insult. It illustrates E5.20.9–16:
- E5.20.9He called upon the Judge who grants the good,Then took the shameful raiment where he stood.
- E5.20.10In woman’s trailing red he sat arrayed,His haughty head beneath a veil displayed;
- E5.20.11He took the distaff, and with bitter zestHe spun the raw white cotton to his breast!
- E5.20.12He bade his veteran captains gather near,The twelve full thousand who had known no fear;
- E5.20.13They thronged the tent, struck speechless and amazed,As on their sepahbod, spinning thread, they gazed!
- E5.20.14He said, “The Shah has sent this robe to me;This is his gift, as all of you can see.
- E5.20.15The Shah commands; we are his loyal slaves,And love for him is what each true heart craves.
- E5.20.16Now speak your minds, you chiefs before my face:What answer shall we give to this disgrace?”
