The Gur-e-Khar Leads to the Palace
From E5.21, The Lady Foretells Bahram’s Future. It illustrates E5.21.3–11:
- E5.21.3A Gur-e-Khar roamed there, an animal fair;No living eye had seen a form so rare.
- E5.21.4He followed, holding back his horse’s pace,And would not overheat him in the chase.
- E5.21.5Within the woods, a narrow pathway lay;The Gur-e-Khar then went down that narrow way.
- E5.21.6When that proud Gur-e-Khar had crossed the lane,Beyond it opened meadowland and plain.
- E5.21.7He followed through the heat across the land,His mouth as dry as dust upon the sand.
- E5.21.8Bahram observed and rode until his sightBeheld a splendid palace, clear and bright.
- E5.21.9The Gur-e-Khar led onward all the way;Izad Gashasp rode after him that day.
- E5.21.10To him he gave his fleet steed’s reins and said,“May wisdom ever guard the path you tread.”
- E5.21.11He passed the porch alone; no comrade wentBeside him. Izad watched outside, intent.
