Hormizd Cast Down from His Throne
From E5.28, Hormizd Refuses Audience and Falls. It illustrates E5.28.24–30:
- E5.28.24The throng, at Gostaham’s words, condemned his reign;Their curses swelled into a fierce refrain:
- E5.28.25“Down with the king who seeks his own son’s blood!”And rage swept through the army like a flood.
- E5.28.26The troops then set the palace gates aflame,And through the royal halls in fury came.
- E5.28.27They reached the Shah and stripped his royal headOf crown and farr; all deference had fled.
- E5.28.28They hurled him headlong from his royal seat,And cast him down before his rebels’ feet:
- E5.28.29A glowing bodkin pierced both eyes outright; The white-hot needle quenched their shining light!
- E5.28.30They left him blind, in darkness to remain,Cast down forever from imperial reign.
