Death in the Empty Tent
From E5.27, Hormizd’s Captain Is Slain. It illustrates E5.27.59–66:
- E5.27.59He turned and sped back like the driven blast,With death and anger in his heart held fast.
- E5.27.60He reached the camp; no helper could be found. The chief sat in his tent, with none around.
- E5.27.61No aide was there, no scimitar or steed; He brooded on the Shah and Fortune’s deed.
- E5.27.62When that freed neighbor stepped inside the tent,Ayin Gashasp knew what his purpose meant.
- E5.27.63The murderer drew his scimitar to fight; The chief implored him, shaken at the sight.
- E5.27.64“Deluded one, did I not beg your life,And free you from your chains and prison strife?”
- E5.27.65The other said, “Granted. What have I doneThat you should seek my death beneath the sun?”
- E5.27.66He struck the noble captain’s head away; His feasts and battles ended on that day.
