The Crone's Warning at Hamadan
From E5.27, Hormizd’s Captain Is Slain. It illustrates E5.27.32–40:
- E5.27.32Ayin Gashasp sent both a man and steedTo fetch the woman for his hidden need.
- E5.27.33He asked what fate the Shah would have to bear,And how the army’s leader soon would fare.
- E5.27.34Then said, “Bring close your lips beside my ear;Tell me what fate awaits my body here.
- E5.27.35Will my soul leave my swarthy frame in bed,Or will a foeman’s weapon strike me dead?”
- E5.27.36While thus he whispered secrets to the crone,So low that none could hear a single tone,
- E5.27.37The man for whom he begged release passed through,Looked at the chief, then went beyond their view.
- E5.27.38The ancient woman watched him disappear,Then asked, “Who is that man who just passed here?
- E5.27.39His blow will bring you death, and men will weep;Your life is in his hands to take or keep.
- E5.27.40May skin and marrow rot within that man;His hand will close the measure of your span.”
