Khosrow Warned at the Wine-Cup
From E5.26, Bahram’s Letter and Khosrow’s Flight. It illustrates E5.26.31–38:
- E5.26.31The son, still unaware of what was planned,Sat glorious in his palace, cup in hand.
- E5.26.32With charming idols and delightful wine,He passed his days, blind to the dark design.
- E5.26.33Two days each week he rode out to the chase,A brave young horseman, full of charm and grace.
- E5.26.34For God had willed that Khosrow’s crown should riseFor many years beyond the moonlit skies.
- E5.26.35A chamberlain caught wind of that dark deed,And cast aside both sleep and every need.
- E5.26.36He hurried to Khosrow and made it clear:The king was plotting murder out of fear.
- E5.26.37He learned the plot and fled that very night; He left Tisfoon and vanished out of sight.
- E5.26.38He saved his precious head and spurred his steedTo Azar Abadagan at great speed.
