Kharrad Unmasks the Weeping Talisman
From E6.19, The Mystery of Caesar’s Talisman. It illustrates E6.19.46–57 (to E6.19.58):
- E6.19.46Since those great nobles failed, he next addressedKharrad, whose piercing thought surpassed the best.
- E6.19.47Caesar then said, “From Ardeshir’s great lineYou come; perhaps her voice will give a sign.”
- E6.19.48He sent him to the mourner from the court,With one attendant trusted for support.
- E6.19.49Kharrad arrived and studied her array,Her crown, her face, and how she sat that day.
- E6.19.50The guileful talisman bowed down to greet;Kharrad watched closely from her head to feet.
- E6.19.51He marked the servants standing all around,Then spoke at length, but heard from her no sound.
- E6.19.52That scion of the chiefs grew full of thought:“Can grief explain the signs my eye has caught?
- E6.19.53If grief had robbed her reason and her will,Why are her servants also silent still?
- E6.19.54If these are tears that truly fill her eyes,Her passion should abate beneath the skies.
- E6.19.55She lets the drops fall always on one place; Her hand repeats its course before her face.
- E6.19.56No other part has stirred, no foot has strayed; The same stiff gesture, endlessly replayed.
- E6.19.57Were life within this form, its tears would stray,Or else its hand would move another way.
