Gordvi Bars His Brother's Way
From E6.25, Soroush Saves Khosrow from Bahram. It illustrates E6.25.40–50:
- E6.25.40Then to the right he turned, his purpose clear,And left the noble warriors in his rear.
- E6.25.41There Gordvi held command and challenged death,Ambitious, valiant, fierce in every breath.
- E6.25.42When he beheld his brother in the fray,He strung his bow and barred the battle-way.
- E6.25.43The blood-stained brothers clashed with all their might; They seemed entwined, so close they pressed the fight.
- E6.25.44For long they strove, and neither yielded ground; The clash of kin and sword rang all around.
- E6.25.45Then Bahram cried, “You villain, would you standTo spill your brother’s blood with your own hand?”
- E6.25.46Gordvi replied, “Mottled wolf, have you heardThe weight of this remembered, piercing word:
- E6.25.47A brother who is friend is heaven-sent;If turned to foe, let skin and vein be rent.
- E6.25.48You hate the Maker in your wicked heart; From goodness and from honor you depart.
- E6.25.49No man of honor seeks his brother’s death,Or fights to rob him of his living breath.”
- E6.25.50Bahram, on hearing this, withdrew in rage,With burning wrath from that most bitter stage.
