Bandvi Strikes Niyatus at the Feast
From E6.29, Maryam Reconciles Niyatus and Bandvi. It illustrates E6.29.4–12:
- E6.29.4When Khosrow left the audience-throne of state,In jeweled robes from Rum, superb and great,
- E6.29.5He smiled, advanced, and sat before the board; With barsom held, Bandvi approached his lord.
- E6.29.6The Shah began the mealtime prayer’s low drone,And with the sages murmured, tone for tone.
- E6.29.7When Niyatus saw this, he spurned the bread,And, in disgust, stood up and spoke instead.
- E6.29.8“The Cross and heathen murmurs mock our King!”He cried, to make the hall with insult ring.
- E6.29.9Then Bandvi rose, defending Iran’s grace,And struck the Roman lord across the face!
- E6.29.10Khosrow was grieved to see the sudden shame; His cheeks grew pale as grief upon him came.
- E6.29.11He said to Gostaham, “This valiant foolShould not let wine make strife his guiding rule.
- E6.29.12What business had he with that Roman lord?He shamed himself today before the board.”
