Khosrow Dons the Cross-Marked Robe
From E6.28, Khosrow Takes Bahram’s Camp. It illustrates E6.28.37–41:
- E6.28.37His counselor replied, “O Shah, take care:The robes a man puts on no creed declare.
- E6.28.38Though you are bound to Caesar, still you holdThe Faith Zardosht the prophet taught of old.”
- E6.28.39He donned the cross-marked robe; the crown hung down,As Rum’s glad envoys praised his high renown;
- E6.28.40Yet Iran’s grandees and Mobadan sighed,And murmured at the sight, dissatisfied:
- E6.28.41“The Shah has cast the ancient Faith aside,And wears the Christian cross in shameful pride!”
