Khosrow Kneels Before His Blinded Father
From E6.3, Khosrow Seeks His Father’s Forgiveness. It illustrates E6.3.1–12 (to E6.3.16):
- E6.3.1When ebony had vanished from the sky,And distant cockcrow rang its morning cry,
- E6.3.2The young king came before his father’s place,With wounded heart and deeply troubled face.
- E6.3.3He saw his sire and broke into lament,Then bowed before him, sorrow-worn and spent.
- E6.3.4He lingered long before his father, dumbWith grief, then spoke of service yet to come:
- E6.3.5“Ill-fated king, whose life preserves the nameOf Anooshirvan and his royal fame,
- E6.3.6Had I stood by you, none would dare to slipA needle’s point against your fingertip.
- E6.3.7Command me now; your sorrow fills my heart,And makes it bleed to see you bear its smart.
- E6.3.8I am your slave, if you command me so,To guard your head through every wound and blow.
- E6.3.9I seek no throne, no crown, no armed array;Before your feet I lay my head this day.”
- E6.3.10Hormizd replied, “O prudent son and heir,This day of misery will fade to air.
- E6.3.11Three things alone I ask, and nothing more:First, grant your presence, which I now implore;
- E6.3.12Each morning, when the dawn unlocks the skies,Console my blinded hours with words I prize.
